Diary of Tiberius: December 4th, 476

To whomever may find this journal, please know that my words are true and the events described hereafter are creating chaos throughout the Empire.  I am Tiberius.  Son of Marcus Augustus, husband to Aelia and a scribe to the mighty Roman Empire.  I live in the city of Rome and I want to create a record of the events that none of us thought would happen, in our life time or our children's.  The Empire is collapsing!  We have abandoned all hope and the city is being emptied of all its precious items.  They are being moved to the city of Constantinople in the eastern part of the Empire.  Now I will describe the reasons for the peril that now plagues the good citizens of the Roman Empire…

At first, the empire was strong.  For 200 years, citizens enjoyed Pax Romana.  The empire was so strong.  The empire had a huge amount of land, so there were people all around to support it.  Also, the army was very powerful, so it was hard to defeat and it would be hard for others to invade and succeed.  In addition to that, we created many new inventions that surely will impact generations to come.  Our form of government was the republic, which was an amazing idea, and I definitely think other places in the future will have republics as well.  We also invented a substance called concrete, which we have used for many roads and for building purposes.  I have no doubt that concrete will carry out to help more people in the future.
As the Roman empire  grew, so did many of its internal problems.  First of all, public health was an issue.  Many people got sick because of the poor hygiene of everybody and the streets were covered with disgusting things.  To add to that, the most important people of the city were killed by lead poisoning.  This was because there were lead pipes that they got their water from.  Also, unemployment became a huge issue.  Many people stopped working, and these people because a big burden to the city.  This was because they did not contribute to society, and also, they were the main reason for the city’s increased crime rate.  Many of them were also alcoholics, and people like that just made Rome even dirtier than before.

A weakened empire allowed the Barbarians to attack.  When the Barbarians attacked Rome, it was already falling apart and weak.  When they attacked, they pillaged and plundered, and they took everything of value from Rome.  People who got in their way were killed, and they took many people as prisoners and slaves.  When they were done, they burned the whole city to the ground, so they left the city in ruins.  Now, I don't know what will happen since the barbarians destroyed Rome.  Everyone is scared, but I must keep going with my life.  I’ll travel as much as it takes to reach the closest city from here and warn the people of that city about the barbarians. To take care of my family, I will have to go through the forest to find food and make fire and shelter.  Protecting them from the barbarians will be difficult, but we have to be quick to get to another city and run away from the barbarians to stay safe. I will get food and shelter from the forest.  I can hunt animals and also find plants to eat.  I can get wood to make a small shelter and for fire.   Still, there is not quite a ruler anywhere for us to have a general direction of how to live our lives.  It is hard to find hope in these horrible times, but with Christianity I am able to keep going with my life.
